Lacrifill for Dry Eye
Overview of Lacrifill Treatment
Lacrifill uses a cross-linked hyaluronic acid gel to fill part of the tear drainage system and improve moisture on the eye’s surface.
The gel is biocompatible, soft, and able to conform to the delicate walls of the canalicular system. Because hyaluronic acid naturally binds water, the gel also forms a protective barrier that reduces evaporation and stabilizes the tear film.
Lacrifill acts like a temporary plug that limits tear outflow so the tear film remains on the eye for a longer period of time.
- Application: After topical anesthetic is placed, a small amount of gel is delivered into the lower punctum with a fine cannula.
- Tear retention: The gel fills the canaliculus and gently blocks drainage, allowing the eye’s own tears to stay in contact with the surface.
- Extended relief: Results generally last about six months, reducing the need for frequent artificial tears.
Most patients enjoy consistent moisture and comfort during the full six-month life span of the gel. When the effect fades, the procedure can be repeated.
Clinical Studies and Benefits
Multiple clinical trials have demonstrated the effectiveness and advantages of Lacrifill for patients with dry eye disease.
In a study of 74 participants who were dissatisfied with artificial tears, Lacrifill increased Schirmer test scores by an average of 3.67 mm at three months, improved tear break-up time by 87 percent, and raised tear meniscus height by 57 percent. Most patients reported meaningful symptomatic relief.
This randomized, controlled, double-masked study involving 157 patients showed a 63 percent rise in Schirmer scores at three months and a 67 percent rise at six months. More than 83 percent of treated patients reported a significant reduction in symptoms on the Ocular Surface Disease Index.
Patients and clinicians value Lacrifill for several important reasons.
- Long-lasting relief that can extend up to six months
- A comfortable, custom fit inside the canalicular system
- Improved tear film stability that lowers irritation and protects the cornea
- Hydrating properties that support healing of the ocular surface
- High tolerability with minimal reported side effects
- A quick, in-office procedure performed with topical anesthetic only
Safety and Tolerability of Lacrifill
Studies show Lacrifill is both safe and well tolerated for a wide range of dry eye patients.
Adverse effects are rare. Only a small number of patients report mild, temporary irritation or slight increases in corneal staining. Because the gel sits entirely inside the canaliculus, the risk of infection linked to exposed plugs is reduced.
Pain scores during insertion remain very low, and the treatment is reversible. If additional relief is needed, the gel can be replaced after it naturally resorbs.
Application and Insertion Process
The Lacrifill procedure is efficient and minimally invasive, making it easy to integrate into routine eye care visits.
Our eye doctors follow a precise yet straightforward protocol.
- Preparation: The applicator is primed with a small amount of Lacrifill.
- Insertion: With the eye comfortably numbed, the gel is gently injected into the lower punctum until slight reflux confirms adequate fill.
- Observation: The canaliculus is inspected to ensure the gel stays in place and the patient feels comfortable.
Most patients resume normal activities right away. Any mild awareness typically resolves quickly, and improved moisture is often noticeable within days.
Frequently Asked Questions
Patients often have questions about how Lacrifill works and what they can expect. The answers below address the topics we discuss most often in the clinic.
The treatment is designed to provide relief for up to six months before naturally dissolving.
Because a topical anesthetic is used, most patients feel little to no discomfort during insertion and report minimal awareness afterward.
Yes. Once the gel has resorbed, the procedure can be safely repeated to maintain tear retention.
Patients with reduced tear production, unstable tear film, or significant dry eye symptoms, including those preparing for eye surgery, often benefit the most.
